Model Overview

The JAC J7 Plus is a C-segment petrol liftback under JAC Motors (JAC), primarily developed for export markets and marketed domestically in China as the JAC A5 PLUS. The model made its debut in Russia in 2021 before officially going on sale in Kazakhstan in June 2024. As a global offering, the J7 Plus is distributed across Russia, Central Asia, and other regions, offering two engine tunes: the domestic Chinese variant features a 1.5T engine delivering 110 kW (150 PS), whereas the export version gets a more potent 1.5T unit producing 128 kW (174 PS). In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,780 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,492 mm tall, with a 2,770 mm wheelbase and a generous boot capacity of 540 to 1,650 litres. Positioned as a high-value family sedan, its key segment rivals include the Chevrolet Cruze and Kia K3.

Design Language

The J7 Plus incorporates a "bionic shark" design philosophy, featuring an aggressive X-shaped matrix blade grille paired with sculpted "fang-style" front bumpers to project a commanding presence. Its full-LED lighting assembly includes "sharp-eye" matrix LED headlights packed with 142 diodes, seamlessly connected to a full-width daytime running light bar that complements the "energy geometry" LED taillights (housing 181 diodes). In profile, the car boasts a sleek fastback roofline (with a drag coefficient of just 0.26 Cd), complemented by standard 18-inch smoked alloy wheels and contrasting red brake callipers. Inside, the cabin adopts a modern T-shaped dashboard layout with a floating centre console, housing a 7-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.4-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support. The 3D ergonomic leatherette seats feature perforated upholstery and dual-density foam to deliver an ideal balance of lateral support and breathability.

Powertrain & Performance

Powering the J7 Plus is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine available in two states of tune. The domestic Chinese variant delivers 110 kW (150 PS) and 210 Nm of torque, while the export specification puts out 128 kW (174 PS) and 300 Nm. Transmission options include a CVT for the Chinese market and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for overseas models. The export version achieves a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.8 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 7.44 L/100 km for the domestic variant and 6.98 L/100 km for the export model. It is fitted with a 55-litre fuel tank and runs on minimum RON 92 petrol.

Chassis & Handling

Built on JAC's MIS modular platform, the J7 Plus rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear E-type multi-link independent suspension system. This four-wheel independent setup is a rarity in its class, which, paired with the Bosch 9.3 Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), delivers a planted and composed ride. The vehicle achieves a class-leading 100-0 km/h braking distance of just 37.4 metres. Steering is managed by an electric power steering (EPS) system, complemented by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold function. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs wrapped in 225/45 R18 tyres. Four selectable drive modes are available: Standard, ECO, Sport, and SPORT Track.

Cabin & Features

Inside, the J7 Plus is fitted with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leatherette seats, featuring heated front sports seats with enhanced bolstering and a rear centre armrest. Cabin convenience is well-catered for with 4 USB ports, a 12V power outlet, a wireless smartphone charger, rear air-conditioning vents, and a powered tailgate. It also comes equipped with a one-touch anti-pinch panoramic sunroof with an integrated sunblind. An 8-speaker audio system, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, cruise control, and rear parking sensors (4 sensors on base variants, 6 sensors on higher variants) complete the interior package.

Safety & Driver Assistance

In terms of passive safety, the J7 Plus comes standard with dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, pre-tensioner load-limiting seatbelts, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, and rear child safety locks. Active safety kit includes ABS with EBD, Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Hill-Start Assist (HAS), Brake Override System (BOS), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). For advanced driver assistance (ADAS), upper-trim variants add Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Collision Warning (RCW), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (CTA). Driving safety is further augmented by a 360-degree camera with transparent chassis display, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian and obstacle detection), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). Its safety cell is constructed from 74% high-strength steel.

Market Performance & Reception

The J7 Plus stands as a cornerstone in JAC's global expansion strategy. In Kazakhstan, the model is priced between 9,390,000 and 9,790,000 Tenge (approx. RM151,000 to RM158,000), supported by attractive financing packages such as a 0.1% low-interest rate and 3-year instalment plans. While some owners have noted that cabin build quality has room for improvement and urban fuel consumption can be on the higher side (tested at around 11 L/100 km), most reviews praise its solid value proposition, spacious interior, confident chassis dynamics, and generous active safety kit. Additionally, JAC has launched the all-electric E-J7, equipped with a 142 kW electric motor and a 50.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, offering an NEDC-rated range of up to 530 km. Combining sporty styling, a class-above multi-link rear suspension, and a punchy turbocharged engine, the J7 Plus has successfully established itself overseas as an accessible, practical sports sedan that offers both driving engagement and daily usability.
